Modelling of dark fermentation from household organic waste based on modified ADM1
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this study, the IWA anaerobic digestion model N°1 (ADM1) was used to simulate and predict the dark fermentation process of a complex organic substrate: household waste. Since ADM1 does not account for metabolic products such as lactic acid, ethanol and some volatiles fatty acids like caproate, that appear during the dark fermentation process, the structure of ADM1 was modified to include them among the produced metabolites. Due to the complex structure of the substrate, a Contois model was included for the disintegration and hydrolysis steps instead of first-order kinetics. A global sensivity analysis using the variance decomposition based method was also performed to identify the most sensitive model parameters. The modified ADM1 simulated satisfactorily a batch experiment.

Dark Hydrogen Fermentation From Paper Mill Effluent (PME): The influence of Substrate Concentration and Hydrolysis
Paper mill effluent (PME) was used as an organic feedstock for production of biohydrogen via dark fermentation using heat-shock pretreated anaerobic sludge under mesophilic conditions. The influence of substrate concentration (5, 10 and 15 g-COD/L) and the initial pH (5 and 7) on the efficiency of dark hydrogen fermentation from PME were investigated. The highest hydrogen yield of 55.4 mL/g-COD...
متن کاملDecolorization of Molasses Waste Water from an Alcoholic Fermentation Process with Phanerochaete Chrysosporium Involvement of Ligninase
Waste water from a molasses alcoholic fermentation plant (MWW) was treated biologically with Phanerochaete chrysosporium. The ability of this white-rot fungus to degrade the dark colored pigments present in MWW and the consequent decrease the effluent's color was examined. The Optimum concentration of MWW for color removal was determined and set at the ratio of 1:10. The color changes durin...
متن کاملDevelopment of a novel three-stage fermentation system converting food waste to hydrogen and methane.
In this study, a novel three-stage (lactate-+photo-H(2)+CH(4)) fermentation system was developed, which converts food waste to H(2) and CH(4), with an emphasis on achieving high H(2) yield. The system begins by first fermenting food waste to lactate, rather than acetate and butyrate, using indigenous lactic acid bacteria. Lactate fermentation effluent was then centrifuged, and the supernatant w...
متن کاملInterfacing the Iwa Anaerobic Digestion Model No.1 (adm1) with Manure and Solid Waste Characteristics
An interface to ADM1 was developed to estimate the solid waste composition from its practical characteristics. The interface was based on COD, elemental, charge and covalent bond balances to conceal any error in collected characteristics from different sources. The interface was validated by reported characteristics of manure and food wastes and determined with relevant accuracy the wastes’ com...
